The sheltered, man-made lagoon, to be built out from the coast and enclosing a bank of hydro turbines, has strong aquaculture potential for farming mussels, oysters, scallops, clams, cockles and seaweed, the industry body Seafish found. But trials would be needed to see how the shellfish and seaweed would grow inside the proposed development, the worlds first tidal lagoon power plant. It would be the first time that offshore marine renewable energy generation has been combined with aquaculture, says the report, which was led by Martin Syvret (Aquafish Solutions) and Dr Andrew Woolmer ( Salacia-Marine) in collaboration with industry partners. The report, Aquaculture Opportunities for Enclosed Marine Water Bodies Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Case Study , uses Swansea Bay as a case study to examine wider opportunities for aquaculture in and around enclosed marine water bodies, such as ports, natural lagoons, estuaries, sea lochs and managed retreats. An Aquaculture Site Scoping Matrix, which can be used by industry to identify further potential locations for aquaculture operations, accompanies the report. The Seafish investigation also created a generic shellfish hatchery design aimed at tackling the shortage of shellfish seed that can be raised to adulthood by commercial shellfish farmers,an acknowledged bottleneck in the sector. It is hoped that the industry will be able to use the hatchery design to help increase the supply of seed and boost production. Lee Cocker, aquaculture manager at Seafish, said: The prospect of sitting aquaculture within an area such as the worlds first tidal lagoon renewable power development is undoubtedly exciting; however, the findings of the project are also pertinent to other offshore renewables sites such as wind farms. The project helpsprovide an overview of aquaculture species and techniques that could be considered in other marine enclosed water bodies, and the hatchery aspect has the potential to support a more general expansion of seed availability for UK aquaculture. Construction of the lagoon, expected to begin in 2018, will take four years, with the first power generated in year three.

(ABC News) The McKinsey report says investment now in old fields in Bass Strait could put a lid on high gas prices. ABC News Close Increased production from existing gasfields, both on and offshore, is one way of insulating Australian industry and householders from future high gas prices. That is according to global industry and management consultants McKinsey and Company, which has released a report on meeting the gas supply challenge in eastern states . Ramping up production from existing fields, known as brownfields, was one of four key measures identified and one of the most time-critical to implement. "There is a growing gap between supply and demand," one of the report's authors, Peter Lambert, said. "We're expecting a declining supply available through to 2020, coupled with broadly flat demand, but that will lead into a relatively large gap between supply and demand up to 2030. "Decisions need to be made to ramp up brownfields production very soon, before 2020, to create a stable local gas price to around $8 a gigajoule. "If it's not, it is possible that the future gas price in the 2030s would range from $8$12, and it would be far more volatile." Extending the economic life of Bass Strait operations The main offshore oil and gas field on the eastern seaboard is the over-40-year-old Bass Strait operations, owned by Exxon and BHP, in the Gippsland basin off the Victorian coast. They say it has worked before. Successful introduction of carefully regulated crocodile ranching during a mid-twentieth century poaching crisis across Africa led to reduced poaching pressure on wild populations, even in countries with weak governance, they note. But another article , published in April in the journal Global Ecology and Conservation asks the question, Under what circumstances can wildlife farming benefit species conservation? Author Laura Tensen, a conservation geneticist at the University of Johannesburg, provides a broad review of wildlife farming projects worldwide and answers, in effect, not often. Swaziland has proposed legalizing aquaculture project consultancy the rhino horn trade, in a bid to make rhino ranching a commercial enterprise. And one of the few success stories she cites might not appeal to some conservationists: The shift in the 1930s from wild-caught to farmed animals was a key to the recovery of many North American mammal species in the luxury fur trade. The debate over the conservation potential of wildlife farming is likely to attract widespread attention next month, when the 182 member nations of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meet in Johannesburg. Neighboring Swaziland has proposed legalizing the rhino horn trade, in a bid to make rhino ranching a commercial enterprise. That effort is almost certain to fail. But given the reality that trade restrictions agreed through CITES are failing in many instances, as Challender and MacMillan put it, farming of other wildlife species is likely to play an increasing role in the anti-poaching debate. Wildlife farming is of course not new. Aquaculture dates back at least 8,000 years, to small eel ponds kept by aborigines in southeastern Australia. Farmed carp, salmon, trout, and other fish species, as well as mollusks and crustaceans, now supply more than half of all seafood produced for human consumption.
